Suppose you are a human resource manager in a multinational firm, what are the challenges you can face today? Is it running day to day manpower management operations smoothly or something else? There are burning Global Challenges in Human Resource Management which as a human resource officer should address immediately. Here we shall discuss few of them.

Remember when Tsunami happened in Japan? According to a Wikipedia article:

The tsunami caused nuclear accidents, primarily the level 7 meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex, and the associated evacuation zones affecting hundreds of thousands of residents. Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least three nuclear reactors suffered explosions due to hydrogen gas that had built up within their outer containment buildings after cooling system failure resulting from the loss of electrical power. Residents within a 20 km (12 mi) radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and a 10 km (6.2 mi) radius of the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant were evacuated.

Now as an HR Officer if you had your employees and offices or factories in that area, then how had you planned to cope with that massive disaster? How would had been ensuring employee safety, evacuate them and rushed food, medicine, and personal supplies along with their salary?

Today as we enter the year 2017, globally and in India challenges in front the human resource department are big and burning. Along with economic meltdown, massive layoffs, mercurial technological advancement, labour unrest, raging war and unexpected merger and acquisitions – as a Human Resource Manager, you need to understand the domino effect of changing socio-economic situations.

I shall give you a small example. Until last decade there was a rush of people from 3rd world countries to travel to Europe, Canada, and the U.S. for Jobs. Now the unemployment level rising at all time high among the Western countries and the United States, many Asian and African country people are facing the backlash in the countries they have travelled for better jobs.

Now as an HR officer how can you effectively handle the diversity issues? How can you recruit people from other countries if you are from European and the United States as the Government is in hot pursuit of curving Visas and cropping the influx of employees from foreign countries?

Today the global challenge in Human Resource Management is mainly on two fronts: one is strategically handling a leaner workforce and the other is managing global manpower operations much smoothly.

Though rapid advancement in Information Technology and the surge of HRM software seems to come to the aid of the HR officers in time but till now much more advancement in technology is needed to face the crisis.

Moreover political volatility in many Asian, Middle East and African countries has made things worse. Here till last decade, many multinational have siphoned off huge investment to set up assembling plants, customer care operations, oil and natural gas excavation operations and warehouses. But due to regional unrest and change in different industrial and labour laws their business is fast becoming less profitable than before.

So it’s high time the Human Resource Managers should strategically review the global challenges in Human Resource Management and 2017 should be the high time to adopt some far-sighted actions in talent management strategies.
